The pneumatic design creates an air cushion between the ground and the forklift to generate a comfy ride for the operator. These tires also reduce the wear and tear on the equipment. Traction is attained via deep treads, making it suitable for rough and uneven ground. Solid Tires Solid tires are excellent for indoor facilities and industrial outdoor jobs. These tires stop blowouts since they are made from solid rubber and act similar to pneumatic tires when they are punctured. There is no cushion-like effect since the tires are not filled with air. This feature makes them unusable for rough terrain applications. Some solid tires are constructed to offer a smoother ride by incorporating some sidewall holes. This kind of construction features less capacity in terms of forklift load carrying. Polyurethane Tires These tires will generally outlast both of the rubber designs but are strictly designed for indoor warehouse use. Polyurethane tires generate a higher load capacity than rubber tires. Electric forklifts often use polyurethane tires to compensate for the extra battery weight of the machine. These tires provide lower rolling resistance and extended battery life. There are a variety of different power sources that can be used for forklifts. Forklifts can utilize liquid propane, gas, batteries, LP gas or diesel. Since it is a clean-burning fuel, LP is preferred for many applications. There are certain facilities that maintain large liquid propane storage on site to enable forklift refueling convenience. Other facilities have spare LP cylinders to facilitate changing out during refueling. Of course, specific precautions need to be taken while the LP cylinder is being changed. Safety equipment including safety glasses or goggles and heavy gloves need to be worn for protection. To maintain the utmost safety practices, the ignition of the forklift needs to be shut down before the tank is changed. Turning the cylinder valve tight closes the hose connection and it can be loosened with ones’ hand. Remember that the valve will turn in the opposite direction of a regular connection. Don’t use any metal tool such as a wrench for connections that have been designed to be tightened by hand. Once the restraining straps have been removed from the cylinder it can be lifted away from the bracket and the empty cylinder can be switched out for a full one. Dispose of the cylinder by securing it in the correct location. Remember, full cylinders are heavy. Secure the hose connection to the new tank with your hand and ensure the seal is secured and tight. Next, turn the cylinder valve on slowly. Once the valve has been turned on, it is important to listen closely to ensure there is no leak. Immediately turn the valve off if a leak is detected and re-check the connections with the hose. Forklifts can be utilized for a variety of applications including interior and exterior situations. They can be used for interior warehouses and rough terrain situations. Warehouse forklift units utilize smooth, flat surfaces. There are different forklift classes; higher classes are used for outdoor work and lower classes are typically utilized in warehouse operations. There are seven forklift classes and four of them are warehouse forklift models. The electric propulsion range encompasses Classes 1 to 3 and these models are suitable for interior applications. Classes five to seven refer to forklift models that are used for towing heavy loads or working on exterior locations with rough surfaces. Internal combustion models fall under Class 4. Class 1 forklifts can be further categorized into four lift codes or subcategories. The lift codes are 1, 4, 5 and 6. A Code 1 forklift has the operator stand up while the lift codes four through six refer to sit down units. Lift Code 6 forklifts have pneumatic tires, lift Code 5 have cushion tires and the lift Code 4 have three wheels. The Class 2 forklifts are the narrow aisle units that are ideal for small spaces and utilize a standing operator. These forklifts are excellent for narrow locations that can’t accommodate a sit-down rider model. Class 3 forklifts or electric models are also ideal for smaller spaces. Class 3 models feature an operator that either stands or walks behind the machine. Electric forklift models are popular in interior locations and warehouses and places that cannot use IC or internal combustion units. Electric forklift models have advantages and disadvantages. Electric forklifts are considered to have a longer running time compared to IC forklifts and are more environmental. These units cost less to operate compared to the IC models and offer superior noise reduction. Electric models cost more money and cannot be used in lousy weather. In order to facilitate continuous operation, have the electric forklifts charge every six hours and keep extra batteries on hand. There is a forklift model available for every industry. Consider the kind of loads you will need to move, the kind of terrain you will be traversing and whether or not you will be working mainly inside or outside to determine the most suitable forklift model to accommodate your needs.
