History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in 1919. The company was first established by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The first name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid during 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machines. During 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. Currently, SMAG is the world's market leader, utilizing grabs for waste disposal, worldwide cargo handling applications and agriculture.
