Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is meant for construction sites, where materials have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The proper and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is very vital in order to ensure the safety of both the operator and other employees at the work site.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care must still be taken in order to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, must just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules governing forklift speed restrictions, forklift drivers must drive at a safe speed at all times. Driving on rough or uneven terrain requires even more caution. Steering, particularly, could be risky at higher speeds.
Incline
When you are operating on an incline, you should keep the load on the machine's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Never attempt to lift a load if operating on a sloped surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the equipment to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Check that the overhead guard is securely in place. Depending on the working environment, eye and hearing protection may need to be worn. Check that a functioning fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
Weather can impact forklift operating conditions. Turning, load handling and speed may need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
