A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine that is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Normally, order pickers are powered by electricity. These kind of equipment are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for transporting pallets and finishing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits quite close to the ground. The operator is able to direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be lifted up to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the materials required, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, however, several businesses might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to complete these particular tasks at some companies instead.
